What's waiting for you
Kyrenia is where most of our guests are heading, and it is easy to see why. A crescent of Venetian warehouses around a stone harbour, a Byzantine castle at one end, and the Beşparmak mountains rising straight up behind the town. The five-star resorts with casinos are concentrated along this coast, east towards Çatalköy and west towards Alsancak.
The drive is the most travelled route on the island. You leave Larnaca on the motorway, skirt Nicosia, cross at Metehan, then climb the ridge and drop down to the sea. From the top of the pass you get your first look at Kyrenia and the coast — worth staying awake for.
Sources disagree on the exact distance, quoting anywhere between 76 and 80 kilometres. In practice, door to door, it is a little over an hour.
What the drive actually looks like
This run has three distinct parts, and knowing them makes the clock make sense. First the motorway out of Larnaca towards Nicosia, which is fast, flat and unremarkable. Then the Metehan checkpoint on the western edge of the capital, where passports are shown on both sides. Then the part people remember: the road climbs the Beşparmak range, crosses the ridge, and drops towards the sea with Kyrenia laid out below.
Only the middle part is unpredictable. The motorway is the motorway and the mountain road is a steady twenty minutes — the checkpoint queue is the one variable, and it is the reason we quote a range rather than a single number.
Where in Kyrenia you are actually going
"Kyrenia" covers a lot of coast, and the last fifteen minutes of your journey depend entirely on which part. The old harbour and town centre is the reference point most people picture. Çatalköy sits east of it, Alsancak and the big resort strip west — each roughly ten to twenty minutes further along the coast road from the centre.
That matters for a night arrival. Tell us the hotel name rather than "Kyrenia" and the driver goes to the door instead of the town, which on a coastal road strung out over twenty kilometres is a real difference.

Worth your afternoon
Kyrenia Castle
A Byzantine and Venetian fortress guarding the harbour, with the Shipwreck Museum and its 2,300-year-old trading vessel inside.
The old harbour
A horseshoe of stone warehouses turned into restaurants. The reason most people fall for Kyrenia in the first hour.
Bellapais Abbey
A Gothic abbey in the hills above town, best at golden hour. Lawrence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons in the village below it.
St Hilarion Castle
A crag-top castle on the Beşparmak ridge, with the whole coast — and on clear days, Turkey — laid out beneath you.
