Arriving in North Cyprus

Larnaca or Ercan? The honest airport guide

In one line

Ercan is closer to the north, but you can only reach it on flights routed through Turkey. If you're flying from Europe, Russia or Israel, the practical choice is almost always Larnaca — fly direct, then cross the border by road (about 1h15–1h40 to Kyrenia).

Whichever airport you choose, the last leg — across the island to your resort — is the part worth getting right.

It's the first question almost every visitor to North Cyprus asks, and the honest answer is: it depends where you're flying from. Here's the real trade-off, without the spin.

The two airports at a glance

Drive times are typical door-to-door estimates and vary with traffic and checkpoint queues.

Why most visitors still land at Larnaca

On paper Ercan wins — it's inside the north and there's no border. But because of the long-standing embargo, no airline flies to Ercan directly; every route passes through Turkey. For a traveller coming from London, Moscow, Tel Aviv or Dubai, that means an extra stop, a longer total journey, and often a higher fare.

Larnaca, by contrast, is a busy international hub with direct flights from across Europe and beyond. You land, clear arrivals, and the only thing between you and your hotel is a scenic drive and a brief passport check. For most people, direct-to-Larnaca beats one-stop-to-Ercan comfortably.

Rule of thumb: if you can fly direct to Ercan (essentially, from Turkey), do. Everyone else: Larnaca, and let someone else handle the crossing.

What the border actually involves

Crossing the Green Line sounds dramatic; in practice it's routine. There are several vehicle checkpoints across the island — Metehan, near Nicosia, is the main one for the Larnaca–Kyrenia route. For most visitors a passport is all that's required, and with a driver who does it daily the stop takes only a few minutes.

The friction people do run into is with hire cars. The UK Foreign Office warns that cars hired in the south often carry no insurance cover in the north, and that you will not be allowed through a crossing without the correct insurance documents — so arranging your own car to the north can mean extra paperwork at the checkpoint. It's the single biggest reason arriving guests choose a private transfer instead.

There is one asymmetry worth knowing

The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise Ercan as a legal point of entry to the island. In the UK Foreign Office's own words: if you enter the Republic of Cyprus through the north — such as through Ercan Airport — the authorities will consider you to have entered illegally. The US State Department says the same. It rarely matters if you never intend to visit the south, but it matters a great deal if you do.

Land at Larnaca and the question disappears: you are admitted to the island legally, and you can cross the Green Line in both directions. Checks are carried out each time you cross, but for visitors they take minutes. The full crossing guide is here.

So — which should you book?

Frequently asked

Should I fly to Larnaca or Ercan?

From Europe, Russia or Israel, Larnaca — you can fly direct and cross the border by road. Ercan only makes sense if you're flying via Turkey anyway.

How far is Larnaca from Kyrenia?

About 1h15–1h40 door-to-door, including a short passport stop at the Metehan crossing.

How far is Ercan from Kyrenia?

About 40–45 minutes, with no border crossing.

Is the border crossing difficult?

No. For most visitors a passport is enough and the stop takes minutes. Hire cars are the exception — a car hired in the south is often not insured for the north, and you will not be let through without the right insurance documents.

Does flying into Ercan cause a problem?

It can. The Republic of Cyprus treats entry through Ercan as an illegal entry to the island, which may prevent you crossing to the south afterwards. Landing at Larnaca avoids the issue entirely.
